Chapter 14
The key to the front door was the same as the one for the back. Good thing because it took me two tries to insert it in the lock. There was no time to reset the alarm. I borrowed a precious extra second to lock the door behind us.
We bolted down the sidewalk. Even if someone saw us from the inside, they wouldnât recognize us. I kept my head down and my ears open for gunshots. Of course, in Albuquerque, if there were gunshots, it might not be related to our little mission. The Old West had never really left New Mexico.
As we ducked down a side street, I pushed my cap into my tote, unzipped the jacket and added it to the bag. Slate followed my lead, losing his jacket and hat. We could have left the car behind if necessary, but the mission hadnât been compromised. Yet.
If sirens wailed anywhere close by weâd have to make a run for it.
Working in sync, we had the magnetic signs off the doors and stashed in back like pros. We were less than half a block from the jewelry store and so far no alarms.
Slate drove while I used the side mirror to make sure we werenât followed.
âWhere am I going?â he finally asked after making random turns to nowhere, up and down streets that led away from the jewelry store.
âMy place.â
âI have software that can enhance those photos if we need it. I can also run checks on the names faster from there.â
âOkay, your place.â I was loathe to drive anywhere other than home because home would give me a sense of relief, but there was no time to waste. If Uncle wasnât at Parkerâs house and he wasnât at the jewelry store...I didnât dare think that his time had run out. No, we had to find out where Parker had taken him. Dead or alive, we had to find him.
After a circuitous route, Slate parked the Ford in his driveway. âIf this keeps up, Iâll need to clear out the other bay of my garage so we can park a car in there.â
I nodded. âItâs not a good idea to leave this on the street, especially not after a job.â
He looked me over, lingering only an extra second on the tight t-shirt I had worn under the loose jacket. It was still dark out, but the sky was beginning to brighten towards morning. âYou okay?â he asked. âOr are you used to these close calls?â
My nerves were still squeaking in protest, although I had stopped the small shivers that coursed through my body. Slate was relaxed now, but still alert and cautious. He leaned closer, never taking his eyes off mine. When I didnât move away, he brushed a kiss against my lips. He wasnât wearing cologne, and I hadnât even had to tell him not to wear scent on a job.
That thought was my last as he deepened the kiss.
He set my nerves on fire, different senses than the ones for the job.
